Data & Visulizations

Data, Visualizations , Software

we need a wikipedia for Data : see this article and comments ..

A Tour through the Visualization Zoo  : Good summary of all kind of visualizations.

D3.js seems the latest and best  from Standford university.
1/ D3.js : Data-Driven DocumentsD3.js is a small, free JavaScript library for manipulating documents based on data

1/ DATA
This kind of data collection gives idea we need 'DATA Wikipedia' , any body can use Data for presentations on their own sites.
This 'Data Wiki' will be on similar lines to 'wikipedia' ( editing rules etc..) and can give out put in various formats .txt , .csv , JSON etc..

2/ Visualizations :
if you have 'Data Wiki' , there should be open source simple visuval Library to display data from 'Data wiki'.
Software:
-it can be similar lines to  google Charts , or new from based on HTML5  SVG and Canvas based Libraries
  - it will have different templates to represent different kind of charts, here are examples
US State Taxes :  just give Array of States and their tax groups , it shows Chart which you can Sort , Order etc..
     Taxes paid by each group
     Top 400 income vs. tax
Average Income in the United States (1913-2006): we need this kind of graph for our OIL ..
Project-R and Visuvalizations Resources:
Here's another useful article from the same site that you linked in your question: Data Visualization: Modern Approaches. Some good blogs on the subject:
In some cases, you might want to do your data manipulation in R, but create the visualization with another tool (see, for instance, this list). Here are some of the best tools that I have found over the years:
Lastly, an interesting open visualization platform is available at many eyes.

1/ Software

1/ D3.js : Data-Driven DocumentsD3.js is a small, free JavaScript library for manipulating documents based on data
(where to use: educational institutes e-learning/ company intranet sites )
2/Tableau: The company traces its roots to  academic research in Stanford University’s Department of Computer Science between 1997 and 2002.
 - TbaleauWorkBooks: Desktop users create interactive data visualizations and publish as packaged workbooks. With Tableau Reader colleagues can interact with results by filtering, sorting, and examining data. (asr: for OIL futures once we create patterns , colleges can use these )
We can now visually analyze multi-million-row tables and datasets directly on the database – without performing interim steps of aggregation, export and import. And because the connectivity is lightning fast, we can do more in less time with more data. - Wells Fargo usage
Gatner Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms: A new columnar, in-memory data engine as part of the latest 6.0 release enables fast performance on large and multisource datasets and on complex queries, such as very large multidimensional filters or complex co-occurrence queries. New zero programming data mash capability, combined with an in-memory database, allows users to blend and visually analyze large amounts of diverse datasets with auto-detect relationships between multiple sources (of any formats). This allows users to connect to any data source and produce a series of interactive dashboards, and highlight and visually filter and pass parameters directly from a graphic, or use filters (for example, check boxes, sliders, relative date filters and drop-down menus), or build in geographic intelligence to analyze their data.

3/ Pentaho : Open source  BI  : Pentaho is a leader in the open source area for Business Intelligence solutions designed specifically for companies in various industries and size.
