Smart Phones

1) Apple sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, a 61% growth year-on-year, but fewer than the 8.75 million it sold in the previous quarter. This may be in some way to be expected with Apple, given their unique smartphone release cycle.

2) But the numbers paint an interesting picture. For example, based on these numbers,
-Apple now sells 92,000 iPhones a day. For comparison,
- 160,000 Android devices are being sold each day,
- 120,000 BlackBerries,
- 45,000 Windows Mobile devices (yeah, I know)
- and 260,000 Symbian handsets.

Apple’s market share in smartphones could now be down to 14%, from its peak of 17%, where it has been for the previous 3 quarters.

Wow, iPads Almost Outsold Macs Last Quarter. And It Was The Most Macs Ever Sold

  • 33% year over year growth for Macs. We’ve outgrown the global market ( 9 million Macs ).

  • 9.4 million iPods versus 10.2 million a year ago
  • iPod touch grew 48% year over year
  • iPod share is over 70% — best selling MP3 player in nearly every country we track
  • iTunes store rev exceeded $1 billion.
  • 225,000 apps — now over 11,000 apps for iPad
  • Over 5,000,000,000 apps downloaded.

  • 1.7 million iPhone 4s in the 5 initial countries.
  • Strong growth in Asia, Europe, and Japan for iPhone

Q: iPad demand?

TC: Anecdotally, I think it’s beyond the early adopters already, as I’ve said. I don’t know what the competition will do. I know they’re working on things. Maybe people will subsidize them, but I’m not sure people really want another contract in their lives.

For now, the only all-clear sign that risk-averse private investors should accept would be a close of the S&P 500 Index ($INX) above its 12-month average for at least one month, and preferably two straight months. That's currently 1,260, but it's moving lower all the time. If you want to take more risk and try to jump the gun at some point, wait for a one or two weekly closes above 1,010.

Thus the crisis will end only when private fund managers replace the government as the market's top credit buyers. Don't hold your breath, though, as that will require a large appetite for risk, which is painfully missing on Wall Street today at a time of shrinking balance sheets.

This new economic paradigm has already slaughtered many hedge fund and mutual fund pros who have gotten it wrong, so it's going to take unusual foresight and patience for individual investors to survive. My recommendation is to avoid getting sucked into rallies in seemingly cheap stocks and high-yielding bonds except for brief trades, and just guard your cash patiently while awaiting the next bull market that's bound eventually to emerge after a lot more sideways action, or worse.

BlogTalkRadio

Aspiring radio hosts need only a computer, phone
Anyone with dreams of being a talk radio star--ranting about sports and politics, chatting with callers, sharing recipes or car-buying tips--can play host on their own show, right on the Web.

BlogTalkRadio, Talkshoe and Skypecasts are among the Web sites that have become popular for would-be radio jocks, and all it takes is a computer and a telephone.

"You can create a show within five minutes and be on the air within 15 minutes," said Alan Levy, the CEO of BlogTalkRadio, a site he started shortly after his father fell ill with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2006.

At first, Levy created a blog for his father, allowing him to easily keep in touch with family and friends. Later, Levy decided he wanted something more than a blog.

"I wasn't feeling like it was a conversation--it was all text," he said. So he came up with the idea of creating broadcasts for bloggers, and BlogTalkRadio was born.

With BlogTalkRadio, hosts use a telephone and computer to create live, call-in shows. Unlimited participants can join, and the service is free because it's advertising-supported. After airing, the shows are archived and become available as podcasts for other listeners.

So far, nearly 46,000 shows have been created--with subjects ranging from entertainment to politics to sports and lifestyle. Actor Brad Pitt, politician John Kerry, baseball player David Wright, and author Jodi Picoult are among those who have been interviewed.

"Some shows are good, some aren't so hot," said Levy. "The cream rises to the top."
