Well this is what the pre web 2.0
world used to call SoA a.k.a Service Oriented Architecture. Appying a Serivce Layer to your legacy applications so that the presentation layer could use those services over the Enterprise Service Bus, without knowing the complexity of the underlying applications.

If you check out JackBe’s customers page, you’ll see that Citigroup uses Presto for “Tax Collection, Bank Tellers, Credit Workflow, Branch executives, Insurance Quoting/Sales and eBanking”; the Defense Intelligence Agency uses it to “paint a picture of situational awareness across various intelligence data sources, using a paradigm of drag-and-drop and bookmarking of the resulting briefing in a private workspace for future use and sharing”;

Bob Parsons 16 rules

Bob Parsons credits 16 rules for propelling him from humble youth to his role today as CEO and Founder of GoDaddy.com.

U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and received the Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and a Purple Heart Medal, BS in accounting,
ooo

A serial entrepreneur, Parsons' first endeavor was Parsons Technology, a software company he started in his basement in 1984, after teaching himself how to write computer programs. After creating the company’s initial software, MoneyCounts and Personal Tax Edge, Parsons used direct mail marketing to sell these and subsequent products.

When Parsons Technology was sold to Intuit, Inc. in 1994 for $64 million dollars, the company had nearly 1,000 employees, $100 million in annual revenue and three million customers. At the time, Parsons Technology sold more than 100 products, was releasing a new product or significant product upgrade every six days, and was sending more than six million pieces of direct marketing mail each month.

1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone.

I believe that not much happens of any significance when we're in our comfort zone. I hear people say, "But I'm concerned about security." My response to that is simple: "Security is for cadavers."

2. Never give up.
Almost nothing works the first time it's attempted. Just because what you're doing does not seem to be working, doesn't mean it won't work. It just means that it might not work the way you're doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn't have an opportunity.

3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think.
There's an old Chinese saying that I just love, and I believe it is so true. It goes like this: "The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed."

4. With regard to whatever worries you,
not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be.
Very seldom will the worst consequence be anywhere near as bad as a cloud of "undefined consequences." My father would tell me early on, when I was struggling and losing my shirt trying to get Parsons Technology going, "Well, Robert, if it doesn't work, they can't eat you."

5. Focus on what you want to have happen.
Remember that old saying, "As you think, so shall you be."

6. Take things a day at a time.
No matter how difficult your situation is, you can get through it if you don't look too far into the future, and focus on the present moment. You can get through anything one day at a time.

7. Always be moving forward.

Never stop investing. Never stop improving. Never stop doing something new. The moment you stop improving your organization, it starts to die. Make it your goal to be better each and every day, in some small way. Remember the Japanese concept of Kaizen. Small daily improvements eventually result in huge advantages.

8. Be quick to decide.
Remember what General George S. Patton said: "A good plan violently executed today is far and away better than a perfect plan tomorrow."

9. Measure everything of significance.
I swear this is true. Anything that is measured and watched, improves.

10. Anything that is not managed will deteriorate.
If you want to uncover problems you don't know about, take a few moments and look closely at the areas you haven't examined for a while. I guarantee you problems will be there.

11. Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you’re doing.
When you look at your competitors, remember that everything looks perfect at a distance. Even the planet Earth, if you get far enough into space, looks like a peaceful place.

12. Never let anybody push you around.
In our society, with our laws and even playing field, you have just as much right to what you're doing as anyone else, provided that what you're doing is legal.

13. Never expect life to be fair.

Life isn't fair. You make your own breaks. You'll be doing good if the only meaning fair has to you, is something that you pay when you get on a bus (i.e., fare).

14. Solve your own problems.

You'll find that by coming up with your own solutions, you'll develop a competitive edge. Masura Ibuka, the co-founder of SONY, said it best: "You never succeed in technology, business, or anything by following the others." There's also an old Asian saying that I remind myself of frequently. It goes like this: "A wise man keeps his own counsel."

15. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Lighten up. Often, at least half of what we accomplish is due to luck. None of us are in control as much as we like to think we are.

16. There’s always a reason to smile.
Find it. After all, you're really lucky just to be alive. Life is short. More and more, I agree with my little brother. He always reminds me: “We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time!”

US vs. Europe Wireless usage

US vs. Europe Wireless usage
I would like to point out that the above numbers are subscriptions and not the actual number of subscribers — often a point of contention. It’s also worth nothing that a lot of folks in Europe are pre-paid customers and that people have a habit of carrying more than one SIM card. Lastly, the comparison between the U.S. and Western Europe is going to get more interesting once we have complete information for 2007

2007-Q3 VC Investments

Despite the seasonal summer slowdown, the venture capital community maintained its furious investing pace in the third quarter, investing $7.1 billion, down just slightly from $7.2 billion in the second quarter.

* U.S.-based venture capitalists invested $206 million in 31 deals in China, down 52 percent from the second quarter, when $429 million was invested in 38 deals. Also in the quarter, U.S. venture capitalists invested $248 million in 22 deals in India vs. $119 million invested in 18 companies during the second quarter.
my notes: - Notice China down big way India catching up , is this just one quarter thing?
- india's share is 3.5% of total VC money not bad
- india's 248/22 ~ 10 million average VC money per company , that is huge money for indian startup companies

* Internet-specific companies took in $1.1 billion via 195 deals in the third quarter, a 17-percent rise, on a dollar basis, over the second quarter, when $903 million went into 160 deals.
* Media and entertainment saw $509 million go into 96 deals, an increase in terms of both deals and dollars from the second quarter, when $464 million went into 77 deals.
* Seed and early-stage investing dollars in the third quarter fell 15 percent, to $1.4 billion in 305 deals from $1.7 billion in 395 deals in the prior quarter.

Tutorials and Training Materials

This great tutorial material taught by Marty Hall is now free to access. Marty Hall is the author of Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages, More Servlets and JavaServer Pages, and Core Web Programming from Prentice Hall and Sun Microsystems Press.

Java language
- good power point slides on each java topic
- Advanced Servlet and JSP
- Ajax: An Introduction & Tutorial
- Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) Review and Exam Prep

JSF - Java Server Faces
- good power point on each topic
- A Simple JavaServer Faces Application
- JSF Tapestry comparision
After several years as the leading Java web application framework, the reign of Apache Struts appears to be drawing to an end. Indeed, the action-based model on which Struts is based is no longer regarded by many as ideal for Java web application development. While Struts and many other Model View Controller (MVC) frameworks from the early 2000s are largely operation-centric and stateless, the frameworks emerging most strongly are component-based and event-driven. The leading contenders in this space are the new "standard", JavaServer Faces (JSF), and Strut's cousin from the Apache Jakarta project, Tapestry.

- Comparing Web Frameworks
Matt Raible has a new presentation in which he compares a sprinkling of web frameworks. He discusses the technical, and political merits of Struts, Spring, Tapestry, WebWork, and JavaServer Faces. Do you agree with his conclusions?

ICICI Venture to float $2 bn real estate fund

The fund from the country’s largest private equity fund (it manages assets of over $2.5 billion in a diversified portfolio) comes just 18 months after it launched a real estate fund of $500 million. Of this, it has already invested 70 per cent in various projects.

The private equity fund is planning to operate in the entire value chain of the real estate business and will now use part of the cash from the fund to build a land bank. It has also decided to buy and manage completed properties — commercial and residential — and sell them later

ICICI Venture joins other majors such as Morgan Stanely, Citigroup, HDFC, J P Morgan, and Kishore Biyani that hope to cash in on the realty boom by floating real estate funds.

25 more SEZs planned in State

Six are to be developed by APIIC and 19 by private parties

Twenty-five more special economic zones (SEZ) in the State involving allotment of 9,250 acres of land near Hyderabad and other urban agglomerations have been formally approved by the State Government. With this, the total number of SEZs in the State will swell to 70, nearly a half of the 154 SEZs (154) already established or in the pipeline in the entire country.

The Centre has already notified 45 SEZs in Andhra Pradesh, covering an extent of 13,665 acres, most of which lie around Hyderabad. It is likely to issue a notification for the 25 new SEZs soon.

Out of the new SEZs, six are being developed by the A.P. Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. These include four facilities for information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services in Warangal, Kadapa, Chittoor and East Godavari districts, and one each for leather and building products in Nellore and Prakasam districts.

Of the remaining 19, six are to be developed and promoted by private parties including Rahejas, Lahari Infrastructure, Genpact India, Parswanath and Dr. Reddy Labs in the vicinity of Hyderabad while three are going to be set up in the State capital itself by GMR and WIPRO. The other SEZs will come up in different districts.

SEZs defy critics, begin to deliver the goods

Since the SEZ Act was notified in February 2006
, 22 SEZs have been up and running. In the last financial year (2006-07), these SEZs collectively exported goods worth Rs 33,000 crore, roughly 6 per cent of India’s total exports of Rs 5,71,641 crore.

This year, according to commerce ministry projections, SEZ exports will more than double to be Rs 67,088 crore. “Next year, exports from SEZs will easily cross Rs 1,00,000 crore,” the official predicted.

Officials also pointed out that 52,000 people have found employment in the new SEZs set up after 2005.

“In most of these zones, employees are from the nearby villages and towns,” an official said. Employment is projected to rise to 2.1 million by December 2009.

VBC, My Home, EIH plan Rs 600 cr 5-star hotel

"Trident Hilton Hyderabad" in Madhapur:
VBC, My Home, EIH plan Rs 600 cr 5-star hotel

We have recently entered into a lease agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government for a long lease period of 66 years and paid an upfront fee of Rs18 crore for the 4.5 acre land,” Rama Rao told Mint, adding that the company has to offer 3% of the hotel revenues to the government under the agreement.

A special purpose vehicle titled Golden Jubilee Hotels Ltd was incorporated to execute the 20-storied hotel project and civil works were commenced last week. The hotel project with 500 suites and 140 service apartments is estimated to involve an investment of Rs 600 crore.
It would be executed through debt and equity components of 60% and 40%, respectively. The company has already tied-up the debt with banks that include State Bank of Hyderabad, Canara Bank and Union Bank of India.

Rama Rao said VBC group would hold an equity stake of 42%, My Home group 42%, while East India Hotels would have the balance 16% equity.

According to In-Stat/MDR, the 18 to 24 cohort had nearly twice the affirmative response rate when questioned about interest in wireless entertainment services, such as wireless gaming. Looking at the services that had more potential business applications, we see less of a variance between the youth cohort and the larger market. The youth market will account for over 25% of wireless revenues and nearly 30% of subscribers by 2008
